Target audience: Kindergarten – grade 2

Objective: Students will recognize the value of using seat belts

Materials: Baby seat, large teddy bear or doll, PE scooter or skateboard, tie-down or belt

Set-up: Attach baby seat to PE scooter or skateboard with a tie-down or belt

Procedure:

Tell a story based upon the following points:

  • Teddy loves to drive.

  • He loves to see the sites of the city, the country, and the market

  • He has problems when he drives

    • He cannot stay in his seat

    • Not when he stops or when he turns the corner

Demonstrate what happens to Teddy by stopping the “car” and turning corners

Ask: “What can Teddy do to solve his problem? (Allow the students to come up with some ideas)

Show students the seat belts and explain how these can keep Teddy safely in his seat. Demonstrate.

  • Teddy can now stop and turn without falling out or sliding around

  • Teddy would like to tell all of his friends and neighbors
